The Kurds and Their Legacy

Kurdistan has a long and turbulent history. Today, it faces a future branching in directions that could lead it towards success or disaster, freedom, or renewed oppression.”

Davan Yahya Khalil, Kurdistan: The Road to Independence

The largest ethnic group in the world without a home or a country, fighting for their identity and autonomy until this day, these are considered the most ancient people in the history by the experts they are even older than Persians and Arabs. Kurds are mainly of Indo-European descent, with a total population of 30-40 million all across the globe. According to many experts, the city center of Erbil, the capital, is considered to be the oldest human settlement to be continuously inhabited by humans on the planet until this day. Most of the Kurds are Sunni-Muslims with un-protected minority status. The majority of Kurds reside in turkey, making the 15-20% of the country’s population. The rest of the Kurds are dispersed in Iran, Iraq, and Syria, with 8-12 million in Iran and 5.5-8.5 million in Iraq, the rest of 1 million in Syria.

Kurds have been fighting for their rights and independence since the 20th century up until now. Kurdistan workers party or PKK has played a significant role in this war. The pursuit of autonomy plays a role in Middle East conflicts. 10% of the Iraqi oil is in Kirkuk province, which helped them make allies with countries like the US. As the military campaign against the Islamic State winds down, the United States and its allies’ enthusiasm for using the Kurds as their proxies against the jihadi organization has not translated into the long-term military or diplomatic backing and certainly not into support for statehood. Turkey thinks of Kurds as terrorist groups that might be a threat to the nation. Kurds are the largest ethnic society but are not given citizenship and rights to own land in Syria.

A 2010 US report, written before the instability in Syria and Iraq that exists as of 2014, attested that “Kurdistan may exist by 2030.”

September 25, 2017, was a historical moment for the five million Kurds living in the north of Iraq, as the regional government of Kurdistan organized a referendum.

“This is the first time in history that the people of Kurdistan will freely decide their future. After that, we will start talks with Baghdad to reach an agreement over borders, water, and oil.”

Mr. Barzani, President of Iraqi Kurdistan.

7 out of 10 Kurds came out to vote for a separate state, that later was counted as 3.1 million votes in total. The referendum turned out to be a massive success, as 93.27% of the votes favored independence, unfortunately the referendum of September back-fired. Turkey, a Barzani ally, was concerned that secessionist sentiment could spread to its own Kurdish population. It threatened to close its critical border along the Kurdish region and stood aside as Iran brokered a deal that allowed the Baghdad government to push back against the Kurds. Kurdistan has its own army of 200,000 and is a close ally to the US. Israel is the only country supporting its independence until now. There’s a better way for the Kurds to pursue independence than relying on outside powers and escalating repression at home.

Is Kanye West Still A Thing For America

Election season is getting underway and the race to become the Democratic challenger to Donald Trump is hotting up. Joe Biden is leading the race to stop Trump from being re-elected, but who else has entered this race?

An American producer, rapper, and fashion designer Kanye Omari West has announced that he would run for president in 2020 for USA elections at Video Music Awards in 2015. He stated that;

“We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision, and building our future. I am running for President of the United States.”

Under the tagline of “2020VISION” and party named as “The birthday party”. In 2015, during his address he also commented;

“It’s not about me; it’s about the ideas, new ideas. People with ideas. People who believe in truth. And yes, you probably could’ve guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”

Soon after 2015, Kanye West shifted his support to the current USA president forming a formal relationship with the office. After the 2016 presidential elections of the USA, the hashtag #KANYE2020 went viral. On Oct 31, 2018, he tweeted

I am distancing myself from politics and completely focusing on being creative”

He has no real background in politics, law-making, or diplomacy the USA might look different than it did before. He would bring a different approach as he is known for thinking outside the box.

During an interview with BBC he said;

“I don’t have a view on politics; I just have a view on humanity, on people, on the truth.”

Kanye West has also been famously known as a supporter of the mental health and criminal justice system and reform of mass incarceration in the USA. Kanye West’s wife Kim Kardashian West has also followed him in these causes. She has worked in fashion, make-up, film and business projects, Kanye himself are a multi-million-dollar musician and composer.

Odds checker that covers statistics and odds have predicted Kanye has 50 to 1 winning chances in USA-presidential elections. In 2015, 25% of the black-Americans were ready to vote for Kanye West; however, the number decreased to 9% in 2020, due to his support for the current USA government. CEO of Tesla Elon Musk has endorsed Kanyes’s election campaign and also has shown full support for Kanye West. Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West have connections all over the globe and it wouldn’t be a difficult job to get votes.

“There will be no end to troubles of states, or of humanity itself, till philosophers become kings in this world, or till those, we now call kings and rulers really and truly become philosophers, and political power and philosophy thus come into the same hands.” –PLATO

According to information listed by FCE, it’s too late for Kanye West for registering with Federal Election Commission (FCE) and meet state-specific filing deadlines for ballot access. In this year, America has a lot at stake, from facing a pandemic that took more than 100,000 lives to racial tensions that are running higher than ever in the past. This is not the right time for vanity stunts or non-serious candidates. Anything that misguides the voters from getting the right information about running a country like the USA is inessential. Editor and elections analyst Nathan L Gonzales told “Complex” that; “if this is an incredibly close race between Trump and Biden than everything matters”. “Third-party candidates’ matter”, According to the report. Kanye West had attempted to get his name on the ballot as a 3rd part candidate, but for this, he needed to collect 132,781 signatures by 15th July to be eligible and run for elections in Florida. He is officially on the ballot as a candidate in the state of Oklahoma, as a representative of Kanye West showed up with a 35000$ filing fee and a properly executed statement of candidacy.

He suffers from bipolar disorder; Kanye’s family was worried that the rapper was suffering from an episode of the disorder based on his presidential aspirations.

Kanye may not be US President this year, but certainly, Kanye could run for the presidency in the coming years. Kanye’s ambition to be a president should be taken seriously than his ambition to be Willy Wonka or a figure that varies God. According to rapper’s political advisor Steve Kramer, he told a magazine that Kanye west was taking his hat out of the ring. “He’s out”, Kramer told. The back and forth continues, as Public Information Officer (PIO) of state of Oklahoma said in a statement that Kanye West has qualified as an independent candidate in the state. He changes his mind constantly but fielded documents in the case decided that he has to move forward. At the end of the day, it is up to him if he decides to run for USA presidential elections this year or not. He must realize now that a lot goes into it than just a plan; he should be prepared for everything required for the long-run in politics in the coming years.

Can people vote? Is it safe? People are not sure if it was a serious decision made by the rapper or only a stunt to promote a new album?
