Cristiano Ronaldo became only the second player ever to score a century of goals on the international stage and the only player still playing to achieve this feat, followed by Sunil Chetri of India and the Argentine sensation Leo Messi. The 35-year-old opened the scoring against Sweden with a sublime free kick in the UEFA Nations League. He is not far off from the first place, which is occupied by Ali Daei, who scored a total of 109 goals for the Iran national team.
Cristiano was stuck on 99 goals had been waiting for his century for over nine months due to the closure of all the games due to the coronavirus pandemic. He missed the previous game against Croatia due to a leg infection, which Portugal easily won with a scoreline that read 4-1.
It wasn’t long till he scored his 2nd of the game after the break and made it a total of 101 career goals to complete the final scoreline of 2-0. The free-kick was his 57th of his career(the most of any current player )and 10th for the national team.
Cristiano scored his first Portugal goal at the age of 19 in 2004 and has since never looked back. He will be looking to retain the UEFA Nations League trophy, which they won last summer beating against Virgil Van Dijk’s Netherlands 1-0. The Portuguese international will now be heading back to Turin to start the preparations for the new Serie A season and work with the newly appointed head coach Andrea Pirlo.
